Learning beginning sounds takes plenty of repetition, but that repetition does not have to feel the same every time. That is why I created this collection of 64 free beginning sounds worksheets for kindergarten.
Instead of asking children to complete the same type of question on every page, this collection includes matching, coloring, circling, sorting, cutting, pasting, tracing, writing, and simple maze activities. The familiar animal pictures help make early phonics practice more approachable and enjoyable.
You do not have to download or print every worksheet. Each activity has its own download options, so you can choose only the pages that work for your child, students, or lesson plan.

Practicing Beginning Sounds with Animals
A beginning sound is the first sound we hear when we say a word. For example, bear begins with /b/, monkey begins with /m/, and turtle begins with /t/.
Before children mark an answer, encourage them to say the animal’s name aloud. Hearing the word makes it easier to isolate the first sound and connect that sound with the correct letter.
Some children may recognize the animal immediately but still need help producing its name. If an animal is unfamiliar, simply name it together before completing the question. The purpose of these pages is to practice beginning sounds, not to test animal vocabulary.

This collection begins with supported activities that provide letter choices. It gradually moves toward tracing and independent letter writing.
Color the Beginning Letter
The first eight worksheets show six animal pictures on each page. Children say each animal’s name and color the letter they hear at the beginning.
The letter choices provide extra support for children who are still becoming comfortable with letter-sound relationships.
These pages are a gentle way to introduce the collection because children only need to choose between two or three letters.

The matching worksheets ask children to draw a line from each animal to its beginning letter. The letters on the opposite side are scrambled, so the answers cannot be matched by position.

The beginning-sound sorting worksheets give children two featured letters and six animal pictures. Children cut out the animals and place them beneath the correct beginning letter.
Sorting encourages children to listen to and compare two different sounds. Before pasting the pictures, children can place them in the columns and check their answers with an adult.

Animal Beginning Sound Mazes
The animal beginning-sound mazes add a playful challenge to phonics practice. Children help an animal reach its destination by following pictures that begin with the featured sound.
The maze paths are large and simple so children can focus on the beginning sounds rather than navigating a complicated puzzle.
For extra practice, ask children to name both the correct and incorrect pictures along the path.

For children who enjoy hands-on activities, the next six worksheets combine beginning sounds with cutting and pasting.
Children name each animal, cut out the letter pieces, and paste the correct letter beneath the matching picture.
I kept the number of animals on these pages smaller so the pictures, blank boxes, and letter pieces would remain large enough for kindergarten students to handle.
Adult help or supervision may be needed when children use scissors.

Color the Animals by Beginning Sound
These black-and-white coloring worksheets show a mixture of animals. Children color only the animals whose names begin with the featured letter.
Each page contains six correct animals and six distractors. The illustrations have large, open spaces that are suitable for crayons, colored pencils, or markers.
Children can lightly circle the correct animals first and color them after their answers have been checked.

Trace and Write Beginning Letters
The tracing pages provide a model for children to follow. The independent writing pages contain blank boxes without answer choices, allowing children to recall the beginning letters on their own.
If a child is not ready for independent writing, it is perfectly fine to return to the matching or tracing worksheets before trying again.

Find and Circle the Correct Animal
These worksheets turn the activity around. Instead of finding the correct letter for an animal, children see a beginning letter and choose the animal whose name starts with that sound.
Children can name all the pictures in a row before circling their answer. This gives them an opportunity to compare the beginning sounds instead of guessing from the first picture they recognize.

You can use the collection in any order, but I recommend beginning with activities that include visual and letter support.
A simple learning order is:
- Circle the beginning letter.
- Find and circle the correct animal.
- Match animals to letters.
- Complete the cut-and-paste activities.
- Sort animals by beginning sound.
- Try the picture mazes.
- Color animals with the featured sound.
- Trace uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Write beginning letters independently.
- Finish with the review pages.
There is no need to complete several worksheets in one sitting. One focused page is often enough for a short kindergarten phonics lesson.

When printing:
- Open the PDF.
- Select portrait orientation.
- Choose the correct paper size.
- Set the scale to Actual Size or 100%.
- Print the worksheet.
Avoid using “Fill Entire Page,” because that setting may enlarge the PDF and crop the worksheet border.
